Pre-launch draft, not a finalised legal document

Shard Hosting is not selling anything yet. This document describes how we intend to operate, has had no legal review, and does not form a contract with anyone. The binding version is published before ordering opens, and the open questions marked below are settled first.

Draft. Describes the website as it is built today, plus what will change when billing and the panel go live.

This notice describes what the Shard Hosting website does with personal data. It was written by going through the code rather than from a template, so the section on what this site collects today is accurate as built. The parts covering billing and the game panel are marked as planned, because neither exists yet.

01What this website collects today

Almost nothing, and we checked rather than assuming.

There is no analytics on this site. No Google Analytics, no Plausible, no Fathom, no PostHog, no Meta pixel, no session recording, and no third-party scripts of any kind. The only <script> tags in the pages are inline structured data for search engines, which sends nothing anywhere.

There is no contact form. Contact is a mailto: link and a link to Discord, so nothing is submitted to us through the site itself.

  • No analytics or tracking scripts.
  • No advertising or remarketing tags.
  • No cookies are set when you browse this site.
  • Nothing is written to localStorage, sessionStorage or IndexedDB.
  • No requests are made to third-party domains while a page is open.

02Cookies

Browsing this website sets no cookies at all, which is why there is no cookie banner. A banner asking permission to do nothing would be theatre.

One cookie exists in the codebase, named shard_admin. It is set only when a member of staff signs in to the internal operations dashboard at /admin. It is HttpOnly, scoped to the /admin path, holds only an expiry timestamp and a signature, and is never set for visitors.

This will change when the client area and game panel launch. Those are separate systems on their own subdomains, they will need session cookies to work, and each will carry its own notice.

03Fonts and other assets

The site uses two typefaces, Archivo and IBM Plex Mono. They are downloaded at build time and served from our own domain, so your browser never requests anything from Google Fonts and Google receives no record of your visit.

All images and icons are inline SVG. There is no external asset host, no CDN pulling in third-party code, and no embedded video.

04Server logs

This site is served by a hosting provider, and like effectively every web host it keeps request logs. Those typically include IP address, timestamp, the page requested, referrer and user agent. They exist to serve the site and to investigate abuse and faults.

We do not currently use those logs for analytics, profiling or building any picture of individual visitors.

To confirm before launch. The hosting provider must be confirmed and named here, along with what its logs actually contain, how long it keeps them, whether IP addresses are truncated, and where its servers sit.

05If you contact us

Emailing shardhosting1@gmail.com means we hold your email address and whatever you write, for as long as we need it to deal with your question and to have a record of what was agreed.

The Discord server is run by Discord Inc. Anything you post there is handled under Discord's own privacy policy, not this one, and we can see your Discord username and messages in channels we have access to. If you would rather not use Discord, email works for everything.

To confirm before launch. Retention period for support correspondence, and confirmation of which mailbox provider is used for the support address.

06When billing and the panel launch

Ordering a server will require more data than browsing does: a name, an email address, billing details and payment information. It will be handled by a billing platform and a payment provider, and card details will go to the payment provider rather than to us.

The game panel will hold your server details, files and access logs, and the node will process connections from your players, which means player IP addresses pass through our infrastructure.

Each of those systems will be named in this notice, with its role and its own privacy terms, before anyone can order.

To confirm before launch. Name the billing platform, payment provider, panel and any email delivery service, with the role each plays and the country its data sits in.

07Legal basis and your rights

Where the GDPR applies, our intended bases are: performing the contract, for anything needed to give you a working server and invoice you for it; legal obligation, for keeping financial records; and legitimate interests, for keeping the platform secure and investigating abuse.

You have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted where we have no ongoing reason to keep it, to receive it in a portable form, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can also complain to your national data protection authority.

To exercise any of those, email shardhosting1@gmail.com.

To confirm before launch. The data controller's legal name, registered address and country, and the supervisory authority that follows from it. Also whether a representative or data protection officer is required.

08Children

Minecraft has a young audience, and we are conscious of it. This website is aimed at the person paying for and administering a server, not at their players.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

To confirm before launch. The minimum age for holding an account, which follows from the account terms and the applicable jurisdiction.

09Changes

This notice will be rewritten before ordering opens, because the systems it describes will exist by then. The version in force at any time is the one on this page.

Questions about this document, or about anything marked as still to confirm: email shardhosting1@gmail.com or ask in the Discord.
